When you tie flies, materials need to be placed in contact with the hook shank. Different tiers find that a slightly different angle makes it easier to use the vise as a hand rest and place materials at the same time. In his book Advanced Fly Tying, A. K. Best spends several pages on the correct grip and hand placement for applying materials to the hook. The angle of the vise determines the angle of your hand, which controls the placement of the materials. Better vise angle, better hand position, better material placement: the result is better, easier flies.

Some flies, like the Clouser and Deep Clouser are tied on both top and bottom of the hook shank. Using this vise, you'll be able to turn the hook to tie on both sides (or just to look at the other side of the fly) without removing it from the vise.
