Which size rod should you select?

Both 5 and 6 weight rods are considered mid-weight, general purpose rods. If you plan to fish primarily for trout and panfish, a #5 rod is slightly lighter and will work well. A lighter rod will produce less casting fatigue after a full day of fishing. If you plan to go after Bass (Smallmouth or Largemouth), you'll likely be throwing heavier flies and will want the increased line weight of a #6 or #8 rod.

Remember that you cast (throw) the LINE, not the FLY (lure), so you'll need a heavier weight rod with heavier line to throw larger flies used to fish for larger species.

Either size is fine to start; if you catch the bug, you'll likely wind up with a number of special purpose rods.
