Enhanced Tool Kit With Clamp Base
If you'd like to start with a kit that's an upgrade to the Standard kit, here it is. This kit has a heavier vise, the FFS Falcon Vise. In addition to being heavier than a Super AA vise, the Falcon Vise has an adjustable vise angle and a rock-solid cam lever to close the vise jaws. Plus, you can turn the fly 360 degrees without removing the hook from the vise jaws.
When you tie flies, materials need to be placed in contact with the hook shank. Different tiers find that a slightly different angle makes it easier to use the vise as a hand rest and place materials at the same time. In his book Advanced Fly Tying, A. K. Best spends several pages on the correct grip and hand placement for applying materials to the hook. The angle of the vise determines the angle of your hand, which controls the placement of the materials. Better vise angle, better hand position, better material placement: the result is better, easier flies.
You can also rotate this vise 360 degrees by loosening the screw that holds the vise head in place. This allows you to rotate the vise head without removing the fly from the vise. Some flies, like the Clouser and Deep Clouser are tied on both top and bottom of the hook shank. Using this vise, you'll be able to turn the hook to tie on both sides (or just to look at the other side of the fly) without removing it from the vise.
Here's the perfect starting vise set. It includes an FFS Falcon vise, dubbing twister, bodkin, scissors, whip finisher, standard bobbin, ceramic bead bobbin, bobbin threader, hair stacker, and hackle pliers plus a C-clamp base. Also included is an instruction DVD that helps you set up the vise, use the tools, and tie four basic flies that will develop your tying skills: a Zebra Midge, a woolly bugger, elk hair caddis, and a scud. This is a heavy-duty vise that will last years, and the tools are the same quality tools that you can buy separately, but discounted in this enhanced set.
Try one of these out...you may decide later to update to a more expensive rotary vise to tie with rotary techniques.
