Football Shaped Strike Indicators
Football shaped strike indicators are ideal for nymph and split-shot fishing.
How To Fish Strike Indicators
To use the strike indicators, locate the indicator about one and a half to two times the water depth where you will be fishing. To set the indicator, place the leader in the slit in the side of the indicator. Grip the flexible tubing at each end of the strike indicator and stretch it while pulling the leader down into the slot. When you release the flexible tubing, the leader should be below the tubing in the slot of the strike indicator, and the tubing should prevent the strike indicator from sliding up and down the leader.
Use a weighted pattern or add split-shot to your leader (above the tippet knot or ring is a good place for the split-shot). Apply enough weight to get the fly down in the water column; this will vary depending on water flow and depth. When the indicator pauses, changes direction, or dips, set the hook. Practice will tell you the difference between a bump on the bottom and a strike.
